THE ART OF THE CASTING: OUR PROCESS
Experience the magic of capturing a moment in time. Based in Dubai, artist Veruska Guanchez combines technical precision with a gentle touch to create hyper-realistic sculptures that last a lifetime. Here is what you can expect during your session:
1. PREPARATION
I’ll arrive ready with my professional gear and a fresh batch of high-grade alginate. This seaweed-based material is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and completely safe for even the most sensitive skin—including newborns. In fact, it’s the same material dentists use for dental impressions. The mixture is prepared with warm water for comfort, reaching a consistency similar to thick custard before it begins to set.
2. THE CASTING EXPERIENCE
Whether your little one is wide awake or peacefully dreaming, the process is seamless. I begin by gently moisturizing the skin before immersing the hand or foot into the warm alginate mixture. The mold takes only about 60 to 90 seconds to set. Most babies find the warmth soothing and often don’t even realize the casting is happening. I will take as many molds as necessary to ensure we capture every tiny detail, from delicate wrinkles to unique fingerprints.
3. RELEASING THE MOLD
Once the alginate reaches a firm, rubbery consistency, the mold is ready. I will gently wiggle the hand or foot to break the suction seal, allowing it to slip out easily and cleanly. If any small residue remains on the skin, it wipes away effortlessly with a damp cloth.
4. CRAFTING THE MASTERPIECE
Once the physical session is over, the meticulous studio work begins. Each sculpture undergoes a rigorous multi-stage refinement process to ensure gallery-quality results:
Pouring & Setting: Creating the initial stone or resin cast.
Refining & Sanding: Removing imperfections and enhancing fine details.
Priming & Painting: Applying professional-grade finishes in your chosen metallic or matte tones.
Sealing: Varnishing to protect the piece from dust and UV light.
Framing: Custom mounting and framing in our signature Dubai-style displays.
